North-Central California

ACCESS conducts its research in north-central California, one of the most productive marine regions in the world.

This exceptional productivity is driven by coastal upwelling, a natural process in which winds along the coastline bring cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. These nutrients fuel primary production, support abundant zooplankton populations, and attract seabirds, marine mammals, and a wide range of marine life.

Our surveys focus on ocean habitats within Federal and State waters in three nationally protected areas: Cordell Bank, Greater Farallones, and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries. These sanctuaries are designated as NOAA sentinel sites, making them ideal locations for long-term, recurring studies. Through consistent monitoring, we are able to detect and track ecosystem changes linked to major oceanographic events such as El Niño and long-term shifts in ocean climate.

Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary

Established in 1989, Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary protects a unique and highly productive marine ecosystem covering 1,286 square miles. Rising from the soft sediments of the continental shelf, Cordell Bank forms a rocky underwater habitat that supports vibrant communities of invertebrates, algae, and fish. This distinctive environment provides essential habitat for many marine species and plays a vital role in regional biodiversity.

Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary

Founded in 1981, Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary encompasses 3,295 square miles of ocean and coastal waters off northern and central California. It is one of the most diverse and biologically rich marine environments in the world. The sanctuary supports an extraordinary abundance of life, including numerous threatened and endangered species, and protects critical wildlife habitat, cultural resources, and important migration corridors.
